MLA

Last week I went to my first MLA Conference. It was a great experience. Had sessions about LibraryThing, Google, 23 Things, Romance Genre, Inspirational Genre, book reviews, breakfast session with Will Weaver. He talked about writing books for young boys. Also a session about the online reference called AskMN. It is a great option for patrons to get questions answered when the library is closed, it is available 24/7.

Thing 23 : Final Thoughts

If you were to offer another program like this again I would differently do it again. I learned alot about the different things of he web that I always heard about but didn't have an idea about. Now I at leas know what people are talking about. I 've heard alot of things about mySpace and facebook some good and not so good but I think using it in a library setting would be great.

Thing 22: What Did I Learn Today

I really enjoyed doing this. Some of the things I learned can take alot of time if you let it. I hope to take some webinars and keep checking into the new sites that I learned about. I'am going to try to spend at least 15 minutes a day adding to my blog and checking my rss reader. Also I plan to use my igoogle more to keep track of things going on.

Thing21: Beyond MySpace: Other Social Networks

I liked the sites that reviewed books; book.gather.com, mnlife.gather.com, I add these as a rss feed. Joined Webjuction. Also checked out bakespace and shelfari which I might keep checking out. But these all are time comsuming to check.

Find more videos like this on 23 Things on a Stick

Thing 20: Libraries and Social Networks

I signed up for facebook account and added the groups that 23 things had listed and also checked them out. I didn't spend alot of time in myspace but I went to the libraries that were listed on myspace and I thought they were wonderful. What a great way to get the teen interested in the library. I think if I were to create an account for the library I would also make to geared toward the teens.

Thing 19: Podcasts

I tired alot of different podcasts I went to podcastally.com, Minnesota Public Radio podcast and Yahoo podcast. I found a book review http://recordingstalkshoe.com/rss17371.xml . I like podcastally the best. As of being inspired to do a podcast I don't think Iam ready for that yet but many sometime in the future.

Thing 18: YouTube & Other Online Video

You sure can spend alot of time looking at videos and really and get sidetracked from what you might be looking for.

I chose this video because if showed how to use ProQuest which would be useful if someone didn't know how to use that database.

Some of these video could be very useful on a library website, advertising programs that might be coming up in the library, showing how to use databases, showing things that are available at your library.

Thing 17: ELM Productivity Tools

These tools are very handy when your a doing research . And you can get the information even when you are not at the library. When you find a article you want to share you can email it to a colleague. This is a wonderful service for library patrons

Thing 16: Student 2.0 Tools

I looked at both Assignment Calculator and Research Project Calculator. Both look like they would be easy to use. I wish I had them when I was doing a research paper. They might have kept me on course.

The handout in Research Project Calculator are wonderful for the student and librarians in doing a research paper.

Thing 15: Online Games & Libraries

Tired Puzzle Pirates I did the bilfing. I wasn't to good. interacting with the other pirates was different. I think if I spent more time with it I could get the hang of it.

I watched the video for Second Life. I really like the idea of having a virtual library. I can see where kids like to play interactive games.

Our library has an x-box and a wii system for our preteens. It is very popular.

Thing 14: Library Thing

Library thing is really neat. It can be really useful for libraries to put on their blogs so patrons can see what the library has and what other books are similar.

Thing 13: Online Productivity Tools

I tried to do the countdown but I couldn't get it to countdown don't know what I missed. I will try later to see if I can get it to countdown. Iam using igoogle for my calendar and and list and reminders. It was a lot of fun picking out gadgets for igoogle . I think this will be real useful when I get in the practice of adding things here instead of notes all over my desk.

Thing 12: Do You Digg

I found that all these were fun to look at and that you could spend alot of time just browsing through them. You definitely can spend more time than you expect to spend looking at them. I though Stumbleupon was really neat Different photos and videos. In all of these sites the articles are pick according to popularity.

Thing 11: Tagging and Del.icio.us

I can see where using del.icio.us would be great if you were doing a research paper. Also in the library you could use it to tag article about libraries. I would love to use it to tag recipes that I find on the web. What is really nice is that you can access your tags from any computer. I could not apply the del.icio.us buttons to my computer at work but I did it on my personal computer.

Thing 10: Wikis

Didn't know to much about wikis before this. All I knew was that you had to be careful about the information because it may not be accurate. I think a wiki would be great to use as a interoffice wiki for the staff with policies and instruction on how to do things. I don't think that schools should ban use of wikis for research papers just emphasize the fact that all the information may not be correct. I edited the 23 things on a stick wiki.

Thing 9: Online Collaboration Tools

Being able to put a document out there and have people change and had ideas to it is great.
It would save alot of time sending things back and forth with the changes. I think google docs is easier to use then zoho writer.
I think our Founding Fathers would be astounded at what we can do now.

Thing 8: Share YOur Creation

I chose to do the PictureRail I didn't have any problems with it. I can't see using this to use what new book you have in the library and pictures of whats been happening in the library. I could spend alot of time just playing around. As for the eFoilo I don't think I would use it unless I was going to school.

Thing 7 Web 2.0 Communication Tools

E-mail is very important in our library its alot cheaper than calling on the phone between libraries. We also use it to let our patrons know when they have a book in and things of interest to them. As for text messaging and IM I have not done any of those. But I would like to in the
near future. Webinar look very good and you can do them when you are available.

Thing 6: Online generator

I had fun making the trading card and doing the cartoon. The trading card idea might be good for showing new books.

Thing 4 : Explore Flickr

This wasn't to bad once I figured out how to to get the blog this button. I think this could be useful in a library blog to show what is happening in the library. I have mixed feelings about putting pictures of people on the blog but you can always have them in private view only.

Thing 3: RSS

I didn't have to much trouble with this. I used goggle reader added a few sites. I can see where you can really spend alot of time with this. It was fun searching for sites. I could not figure out how to get it to my blog.

Thing 2: Web 2.0

In Stephen Abram's video his says in order to make time to do 23 things you need to decide whats important just like you decide whats important inn other things in your life.

John Blyberg's blog its very important for a library to keep up with all the new things in technology in order for a library to keep growing. People are using these new tools and we need to have them available at the library.

I'am looking forward to learning about flicker, myspace, facebook on 23 things on a stick

Thing #1

I just finished creating a blog it was very scary to begin with but the more you work on it the better it is.
